I am honored to be serving as a member of the Darrell K Royal Research Fund Legacy Council, helping in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease.
My wife, Abby, has seen the heart-breaking effects that Alzheimer’s causes to loved ones and members of the family. Abby’s paternal grandfather, General Bennie Luke Davis, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006. He passed away in 2012 after struggling with the disease for many years. Bennie was raised in McAlester, Oklahoma where he became a star football player. He continued his football career in college at the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating from West Point, he entered the United States Air Force. Bennie served in the Air Force for 35 years. During his time in the Air Force he received graduate degrees from George Washington University and the Harvard School of Business. He worked his way up the military chain and eventually served as commander-in-chief of Strategic Air Command, and as the director of Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff. The command was the major American nuclear deterrent force with bombers, tankers, reconnaissance aircraft and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Bennie and his staff coordinated United States nuclear war planes from 1981-1985. His intelligence and sharp memory allowed him to serve his country, and the effects that Alzheimer’s had on his greatest strengths caused Bennie and his family much grief and pain at the end of his life.
Abby and I will work to raise money to help fight this disease in honor of this brave and selfless man.
