Katie Smith's Fundraising Page

Katie grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She works for Kendra Scott Jewelry as the Specialty Wholesale Account Executive for the East Coast and lives with her husband, Andrew, in Austin.

Katie’s grandmother, Janet, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2008. Janet is a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who now lives in a full-care home in Kent, Washington.

Janet raised her son, Bob, Katie’s father, and his sister, Pat, in the great outdoors on beautiful Mercer Island in Washington state. It was on Mercer Island where she instilled in her children a love and appreciation for nature and the outdoors. This love of the outdoors is Janet’s legacy, and it has been passed down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

As Janet aged and became affected by her disease, her short-term memory diminished and her lifestyle suffered dramatically. Janet’s condition is a daily reminder to all of Katie’s extended family of the impact of the disease and the helplessness it creates amongst friends and family.

Through her grandmother, Katie is driven to advance critical Alzheimer’s research in the pursuit of prevention and a cure. She has seen first-hand the daily toll the disease exacts on caregivers and loved ones, and she hopes that our current generations will be the last that have to experience and witness this terrible disease.
